Budding Hockey Star Death Cause

Abakar Kazbekov of the London Knights fights for position during an Ontario Hockey League game against the Owen Sound Attack at Budweiser Gardens on Friday, December 16, 2022. Kazbekov, 18, would die hours later.

Three years ago, Abakar Kazbekov moved from Moscow to Toronto to pursue his hockey dream.

He didn’t know a word of English when he joined the Vaughan Kings’ AAA Under-16 Junior Midget team in November of the 2019-20 season.

“It was one of those situations where he’s okay, let’s see what he looks like,” recalled Mark Filippone, the Kings’ coach that year, “and he started doing amazing things in games. He was a great hockey player, but just a good guy to be around. He was always laughing and hanging out with the guys. They gravitated toward him like he was a kid from Mississauga playing hockey on our team.”

The entire hockey world was shocked after learning of Kazbekov’s sudden death early Saturday, none other than his Knights family and those closest to him. The 18-year-old striker played in London’s 5-2 win over Owen Sound on Friday night at Budweiser Gardens, the team’s 15th win in their last 17 games.

The Moscow native had been a member of the Knights since the start of last season. He previously played in the Russian under-16 and under-18 leagues.

Kazbekov recorded one assist in 12 appearances for London this season. He scored one goal in nine games last season.

The league also announced the postponement of two other games, the Erie Otters vs. Saginaw Spirit and the Kingston Frontenacs vs. Peterborough Petes, due to sensitivity towards people involved in the games who were close to Kazbekov.
