Arshad Sharif Wiki – Arshad Sharif  Bio

Arshad Sharif, a Pakistani journalist, writer, and TV news presenter has died. He specialized in investigative journalism and covered many political events in the country for national and international news organizations, including the UK. On March 23, 2019, he was awarded the Pride of Achievement by the President of Pakistan, Arif Alvi, for his contributions to journalism.

Sharif was the host of the Power Play show on ARY News. He served at AAJ News as news director. Before joining Aaj, he ran the news team at Dunya News as news director and was the host of the Kyun show.

Arshad Sharif was born in Karachi, Pakistan, the son of a Commander of the Pakistan Army, Muhammad Sharif TI(M) TK. He began his journalistic career as a freelancer in 1993 when he was still a student. He received his Master of Science in Public Administration from Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad.

Arshad Sharif died at the age of 49 years old.

Family & Siblings

Arshad Sharif’s father, Major Muhammad Sharif, died of a heart attack at the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology in May 2011. His younger brother, Major Ashraf Sharif, died when his car skidded off the road when he was on his way to his father’s funeral in May. 2011. Upon learning of his father’s death, Major Ashraf Sharif left the Bannu cantonment, refusing a driver or escort. A few miles away, his vehicle went off the road and hit a tree, killing him. Major Muhammad Sharif and Major Ashraf Sharif were buried with full military honors at the H-11 cemetery.

Career

Sharif’s first media job was with a weekly publication, Pulse, for which he was a columnist, reporter, and managing editor in 1999. He joined The News in 1999 and Daily Dawn in 2001.

Sharif covered conflicts in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas with a specialization in defense and foreign affairs. He reported for major Pakistani news organizations from London, Paris, Strasbourg, and Kiel. He was the winner of a 2012 Agahi Award. Sharif as presenter and Adeel Raja as producer won the 2016 Investigative Journalist of the Year Award for the show Powerplay. In 2018, Sharif received Agahi’s Peoples’ Choice Award: Favorite Current Affairs Presenter – Male.

He started his Power Play show on ARY News in 2014.

Sharif also ran AAJ News and Dunya TV as ‘Director of News. He worked as a Bureau Chief for Dawn News in 2011.

In August 2022, Sharif fled Pakistan to avoid arrest after a series of indictments, including sedition charges for an interview with PTI leader Shahbaz Gill, during which the latter made controversial comments. Citing threats against his life, Sharif moved to Dubai and then to Kenya.

Cause of Death

Sharif was shot dead in Kajiado, Kenya by local police on October 23, 2022. Kenyan police described the shooting as a case of “mistaken identity” and there was speculation on social media that he had been murdered. On October 24, the Kenya Independent Police Oversight Authority announced an investigation into Sharif’s death.

The news of Sharif’s assassination caused a stir in Pakistan and abroad. Pakistani President Arif Alvi described Sharif’s death as “a great loss for journalism and Pakistan”. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the killing as “shocking news”. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan wrote on Twitter that he was “shocked by the brutal murder of Arshad Sharif, who paid the highest price for telling the truth: his life.”

Afzal Butt, president of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), expressed his pain at the news and called for an investigation into Sharif’s murder. Journalist Kamran Khan questioned the government on Twitter, calling on the prime minister to take “the nation in trust”.

Close friends and colleagues came to Sharif’s home to express their condolences, including Imran Khan, Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad, Murad Saeed, and journalist Imran Riaz Khan.
