Accused of Kidnapping and Exploiting Mother

Catherine Areu Jones admitted her mother to a center after convincing her she was going to an ‘ice cream outlet’ with her granddaughters.

Areu was booked into a Miami jail early Friday for a series of serious crimes, including kidnapping, elder exploitation, and an organized scheme to defraud. Miami-Dade police detectives had been trying to arrest her since June when a judge signed a warrant for her arrest.

According to a press release from the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, it is believed that she was evading arrest herself and even went to Mexico for a time. Areu, who also goes by Cathy Areu Jones, remained in jail Friday afternoon and was being held without bail. A Miami-Dade assistant public defender listed as her attorney did not respond to a request for comment Friday afternoon.

Investigators say they believe Areu may have gotten away with more than $224,000 of her 88-year-old mother’s finances, including proceeds from a reverse mortgage on her mother’s home. Investigators also believe Areu made bank withdrawals from her mother’s bank accounts and opened credit cards in her name.

The investigation began in 2019 when state welfare investigators received a report that Areu was exploiting her mother. The old woman’s house had been handed over to Areu through a resignation deed, a document the victim denied having signed, according to the press release. Areu later claimed that other people were exploiting her mother and that the woman had brain damage or dementia, according to the report.

“Every incident of alleged elder abuse or exploitation touches our hearts and never ceases to amaze us. It seems particularly difficult to understand when the alleged perpetrator of the exploitation is a daughter, son, or another blood relative,” State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said in a statement Friday.

According to her online profiles of her, Areu in the early 2000s was the editor of Catalina magazine, which was “dedicated to breaking stereotypes of Latinos in the US.” In her Fox News biography, which remains active on the network’s website, she also claims to have been a contributing editor for The Washington Post magazine between 2000 and 2012.
