Christopher Darnell Jones Jr, The University of Virginia student who allegedly killed three football team members had been on police radar since September and had a previous criminal incident involving a concealed weapon, officials revealed at a news conference Monday.
Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. was arrested after a 12-hour manhunt following the shooting on the school campus in Charlottesville on Sunday night.
“Because I want to be transparent with you, I want you to know [that] … Mr. Jones came to the attention of the University of Virginia threat assessment team in the fall of 2022,” said school police chief Tim Long.

Jones had been on the threat assessment team’s radar before due to a hazing investigation that was eventually closed after uncooperative witnesses. Police did not provide further details about the incident.
In particular, Longo said that while investigating the hazing incident, the school “learned of a previous criminal incident involving a concealed weapons violation that occurred outside of the city of Charlottesville in February 2021.
