According to reports from the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, Pinkerton appears to have shot Albert and her pets before committing suicide.

“This is believed to be a murder-suicide. Agents were contacted by a friend of the deceased after receiving a concerning message from Eric Pinkerton. Eric Pinkerton is believed to have shot his wife and several animals in the home before killing himself,” the BCSO statement said.

Albert was a Los Ranchos Deputy Judge and was recently elected Los Ranchos Municipal Judge. She was a licensed and practicing patent attorney.

Albert, 65, and Pinkerton, 63, were found by deputies Friday after a friend of the couple contacted authorities to receive a “concerning message” from Pinkerton, sheriff’s spokesman Jayme Fuller said.

He “left a voice message for his friend saying that he murdered his wife, his dogs and his cat. And he is about to kill himself,” according to a dispatch compiled by local news station KOAT-TV.

NBC News reported that the sheriff’s office confirmed the dispatch.

City officials mourned his death over the weekend.

“We are saddened to hear of the untimely death of Diane Albert, our elected municipal judge,” Los Ranchos Mayor Donald Lopez and Village Manager Ann Simon said in a joint statement. “She was a long-time resident of Los Ranchos, a brilliant legal mind, and a friend.”

Albert was also a practicing patent attorney, according to the Albuquerque Journal.

A neighbor of Albert’s, Joe Craig, told the newspaper that he was shocked by her death. Craig, the president of Friends of Los Ranchos, served on the planning and zoning commission for several years.

“Just a nice, nice lady,” he said. “I’ve never seen her with a bad bone in her body.”
