Delgado also confirmed his nephew’s death in a Facebook post on Tuesday, writing in part, “One thing is certain, my beautiful niece did not survive the actions of this coward.”

“I am angry that these shootings continue. These children are innocent. Rifles should not reach everyone easily. This is my hometown, a small community of less than 20,000 people. I never thought this would happen, especially to my loved ones,” Delgado said. He told ABC7. The only thing we can do is to pray a lot for our country, our state, our schools and especially their families.”

Mireles’ cousin, Klarissa Quiller, also made a statement on Facebook, saying, “This world is so cruel. My heart hurts and I can’t find words to say. How can a person be so bad that they hurt innocent people/children!” Please continue to pray for the soul of our beautiful cousin lost in this tragedy along with all the babies.”

Hours after the massacre, President Joe Biden addressed the nation in a speech of about eight minutes and said in part: “When I became President, I hoped I wouldn’t have to do it again, another massacre in Uvalde, Texas. Beautiful, innocent second, third, and fourth graders. Witness what happened. All those little kids who are old enough to see their friends die, it’s like they’re on a battlefield for God’s sake.”

Biden continued: “Parents who will never see their child again. Never jump into their beds and cuddle with them. Parents that will never be the same. Losing a child is like having a piece of your soul taken off. There’s an emptiness in your chest, you feel like you’re being sucked in and you’ll never get out again. It’s drowning, it’s never the same. It’s a feeling shared by siblings, grandparents, family members, society. That’s gone.”
