NYC Man Accused of Shooting Jewish Dad and Son

Jason Kish was charged with assault as a hate crime, reckless endangerment, and endangering the welfare of a child for Sunday’s attack that came amid a spate of anti-Semitic hate crimes in the Big Apple.

Kish allegedly walked past the couple, who were wearing yamulkas and another traditional Jewish garb, and fired shots from the driver’s-side window, police said. The duo was returning a shopping cart in front of the Kosher Island Market in Meiers Corners when they were attacked.

Surveillance video captured the moment the 7-year-old boy was punched in the ear. He bends down, covers his head, and looks at his father, confused by him. His father, who was hit in the chest, drops the cart and attends to his son as the shooter speeds away. Both were treated for minor injuries.

Police began searching for Kish’s Mustang as soon as the crime was reported, Bureau of Detectives Chief Michael Baldassano said Tuesday. Kish was detained approximately an hour into the search, identified, and released.

After reviewing security footage of the shooting and comparing it to body camera footage of Kish being pulled over, police realized that both Mustangs had the same distinctive marking, Baldassano said.

Ringside footage taken from a house a few blocks from the kosher market also captured Kish allegedly holding a pellet gun out the window of his mustang.

“A father and son, simply going to the store to buy groceries for their families, as I had done the day before in my neighborhood, were shot by someone who was acting – we believe and will argue in court – out of hate,” said the Staten Island District Attorney Michael McMahon at a press conference Tuesday.

“And while we thank God no one was seriously injured, this violent incident underscores the alarming rise in anti-Semitic hate crimes we see, and their rhetoric, in our country, in our city, in our state.”

Anti-Semitic hate crimes increased 125% in November compared to the same month last year, statistics show.

There have been 278 reported anti-Semitic attacks this year, an increase of 52.7% over the same period last year, NYPD data shows.

“You have to think about the impact of this,” Mayor Eric Adams said Tuesday. “There are no serious injuries, but emotionally the severity is real.”

“That young man may never walk down that street again without thinking about that incident.”

Kish has had other run-ins with the law; he has previously been charged with petty theft and threats.

Adams encouraged New Yorkers to not only report crimes and provide information to the police but also create signs to show that the city is against discrimination.

“We are not going to let hate rule our city,” Adams said.
