Charged & Arrested
A teenage suspect has been arrested for murder for hitting a Bronx man who had just been shot three times with a car, police said Wednesday.
41st Precinct detectives nabbed 19-year-old Jovant Erazo on Tuesday and charged him with murder and vehicular manslaughter in the Oct. 15 slaying of 33-year-old Cortez Hinton.
“This gives me hope,” the victim’s mother, Toni Hinton, said of the arrest, the first in the case.
Detectives are still searching for the shooter and two passengers in the car.
“I love everyone who did this,” Toni Hinton told the Daily News by phone from her North Carolina home on Wednesday. “They have to be off the street and whoever is harboring them needs to go as well.”
Hinton was walking down Kelly St. in Foxhurst when a gunman opened fire on the street near Westchester Ave. around 8:10 a.m., police said.
As the injured victim lay on the ground, Erazo, who was driving a gold and brown sedan, allegedly ran him over.
“He got hit twice, went around the block, and got hit again,” NYPD Detective Chief James Essig said on Oct. 17. That same day, police released surveillance video of the shooter, who was dressed entirely in black and wearing colored lights-sneakers.
The gunman spoke to at least two people sitting in a red car on the block before running toward Hinton and shooting, the video shows.
Hinton was hit in the torso and groin by the gunshots before the driver hit him, police said.
Medics responding to the scene discovered that Hinton was shot and suffered severe head and body trauma. He was rushed to Lincoln Hospital, where he died about three hours later.
Hinton was just a few blocks from his house when he was shot and beaten. Detectives believe the murder was drug related. Eight bags filled with marijuana were recovered at the scene, Essig said.
Hinton’s wife sobbed and screamed at the scene of the shooting as a friend tried to comfort her.
Hinton was pronounced dead at Lincoln Medical Center.
Police caught up with Erazo on Tuesday and charged him with murder, vehicular manslaughter, and assault, police said.
The two men were involved in a fight before the deadly incident, but police had no details Wednesday about the nature of that confrontation.
Police also could not confirm if Erazo and Hinton knew each other. Erazo lived just a few blocks from the murder scene, while Hinton lived more than a mile away.
Erazo racked up 10 prior arrests between 2016 and 2021, for crimes including assault, robbery, theft, threats, and criminal mischief, authorities said.
