Laney Chantel, who appeared on the SyFy Network competition show “Face Off,” died after an accidental overdose in Michigan on Monday.

Chantal, whose real name is Alaina Chantal Parkhurst, died Monday in Milford, Michigan, her family confirmed in a public obituary, writing that she had “struggled with various mental illnesses throughout her adult life.”

Laney Chantel, a noted FX makeup artist, and mask designer, came into the spotlight after appearing on SyFy Network’s competition show “Face Off” in 2013 for its fifth season. She voluntarily withdrew from the reality show about special effects makeup artists and came in fifth place.

Laney Chantel worked with several big-name stars after her appearance on the show, including Bella Thorne and Marilyn Manson. She even created “Head FX makeup” for rapper Lil Nas X for his controversial “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” music video in 2021, which won Video of the Year at the MTV VMAs.

Fellow make-up artist Gabriella Acarino remembered Chantal as her “sister and soulmate”.


Laney Chantel died at the age of 33 years old.

According to her family, Chantal moved from Michigan to Los Angeles after graduating from high school in 2007 to attend Cinema Makeup School, where she got certified to become a special effects makeup artist.

“Alaina put all her being; body, mind, and soul in her works, no matter the size,” she said in her obituary. “Her artistic ability of hers and her visions quickly set her apart from other artists in her field and her portfolio blossomed.”

Her family did not provide any additional details about her death, other than that it was due to “an accidental drug overdose.”

Cause of Death

Famed makeup artist and former reality star Laney Chantal died this week of an accidental drug overdose. She was 33 years old.

Six months before her death, Chantal posted a photo on Instagram of a pink coffin being buried.

The Parkhurst family requested donations to The Brain & Behavior Research Foundation, noting the struggles her daughter experienced with mental health throughout her life.
