Mark Shields was an American political columnist, consultant, and commentator, deceased has died. He has held leadership positions in the election campaigns of many Democratic candidates.

Shields was born and raised in Weymouth, Massachusetts, in an Irish Catholic family. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1959 with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy.

Mark Shields died at the age of 85 years old.


Shields went to Washington in 1965, where he became an aide to Wisconsin Senator William Proxmire. Shields began working for Robert F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign in 1968. He later held leadership positions in the presidential campaigns of Edmund Muskie and Morris Udall and was the political director of Sargent Shriver when he ran for vice president for the Democrats in 1972. For more than a decade, he has helped lead state and local campaigns in 38 states, including the successful 1975 re-election campaign of incumbent Boston mayor Kevin White.

Shields was a regular political commentator on the PBS NewsHour from 1988 to 2020. Anchorwoman Judy Woodruff announced in the December 14, 2020 issue of the NewsHour that Shields will be leaving the program as a regular analyst after the December 18 edition. During Shields’ last regular appearance on December 18, Woodruff added that he will continue to contribute occasionally to the NewsHour during important political news and events.

Shields was the author of On Campaign Trail about the 1984 presidential campaign.

Wife & Children

Shields married Anne Hudson in 1966, a lawyer and former public service officer in the United States Department of the Interior. He had a daughter, Amy, and two grandchildren.

Cause of Death

Shields died of kidney failure at the age of 85 on June 18, 2022, at his home in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

The news of his death was shared on Twitter by Newshour anchor Judy Woodruff.

“I’m heartbroken to share this,” he tweeted, stating that for decades, Shields has captivated us with his encyclopedic knowledge of American politics, his sense of humor, and essentially his big heart.

She said he died with his wife Anne beside him.

He was also a regular on “Inside Washington” on PBS and ABC from 1988 to 2013 and moderated CNN’s “Capital Gang” for 17 years.
