One of Gretchen’s charges involves a felony murder charge in connection with the death of 78-year-old Martha Fortney, according to court documents reviewed by Law&Crime. She has been charged with two more felonies, including aggravated assault and aggravated assault with strangulation. East Cobb News was able to receive a copy of the probable cause affidavit, which states that Gretchen is accused of assaulting Martha at a home in the 3900 block of Loch Highland Pass in Roswell at approximately 5:11 a.m. on September 30.

While it is unknown how the Cobb County Police Department received information about the alleged assault, around 3:44 p.m. m. officers arrested Gretchen at a location in the 500 block of South Fairground. According to her arrest warrant, Gretchen fatally strangled Martha in her own home after savagely attacking her with “an unknown object or objects.”

East Cobb News reported that investigators believe Martha has multiple injuries to her head and torso. The warrant reportedly says that “[Martha] was observed with what appeared to be her gown belt tied or looped around her neck,” adding that the victim also had a “visible ligature mark that resulted in her death.”

As for the relationship between Martha and Gretchen, the authorities have not yet revealed any information. Records indicate that she is still being held without bond. At this time, there is no attorney on file to defend the defendant against felony charges.
