Matthew Anderson is a Florida sheriff’s deputy who was arrested Tuesday for having sex with a teenage boy he supervised in the department’s juvenile cadet program, including multiple dates while on duty, authorities said.
Bay County Sheriff’s Deputy Matthew Anderson admitted to having sex with the 17-year-old a total of seven times.
Matthew Anderson is 21 years old.
Charged & Arrested
The agency said Anderson acknowledged having illicit contact with the victim while on active police duty.
“The Bay County Jr. Deputies and Explorers Program is a program for youth interested in law enforcement,” Bay County Sheriff Tommy Ford said in a statement.
“It breaks my heart to know the damage these actions have caused to our children in the program.”
Anderson has been placed on unpaid leave and faces a sexual assault charge.
Ford said he planned to meet with the parents of other teens enrolled in the program to address any concerns they might have about the arrest.
“We will not let the actions of one person destroy the many positive successes of this program,” Ford said.
Florida’s Law Enforcement Explorer program serves those with “an interest in a career in law enforcement,” according to the Florida Sheriffs Association.
In a separate abuse of power case, a September sex trafficking sting operation by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, another Florida law enforcement agency, resulted in the arrest of 160 people, including a police officer. Georgia police officer Jason DiPrima.
Announcing “Operation Fall Haul II,” Sheriff Grady Judd said during a news conference that DiPrima, who was deputy chief of Georgia’s Cartersville Police Department, “is no longer a police officer.”
The Cartersville Police Department later said in a news release that DiPrima resigned pending an internal investigation.
Florida’s Law Enforcement Explorer program is suitable for those with “an interest in a law enforcement career,” according to the Florida Sheriff’s Association.
