Payton S. Gendron is the suspect in Saturday’s mass shooting at a Buffalo, N.Y. supermarket that killed 10 people and is charged with first-degree murder.
A tweet by the Erie County District Attorney’s Office identified the suspect as Payton S. Gendron, from Conklin, N.Y., about 200 miles southeast of Buffalo.

The suspect, whom authorities said had broadcast the attack live, had been released on bail and a criminal trial was scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Thursday, May 19, according to the prosecutor’s office. The New York Times reported that he pleaded not guilty.
Authorities described the shooting as a racially motivated attack targeting Black people. It took place around 14:30. At the Tops-Friendly Markets at 1275 Jefferson Avenue, which officials say is a predominantly Black neighborhood.
In addition to the 10 fatal victims, three people were injured that were not life-threatening, officials said. According to Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia, 11 out of 13 victims, including non-fatal victims, were Black, according to CNN reports.
“This was straight up a racially motivated hate crime,” Erie County Sheriff John Garcia said at a press conference Saturday.
The attacker got out of his car at around 14.30. Gramaglia said he shot four people, killing three, in the store’s parking lot. He then entered the store and shot more people.
Gramaglia said a security guard, a former police officer at the store, intervened with the gunman, but was protected by the shooter’s tactical gear. The shooter then shot at the security guard, killing him.
Gramaglia said Buffalo police, who responded to the scene, contacted the suspect, who held a gun to his neck before officers persuaded him to drop the gun. Meanwhile, the suspect was taken into custody.
