Sam Bankman-Fried, Disgraced cryptocurrency king Sam Bankman-Fried was arrested by Bahamian authorities Monday night after US prosecutors filed criminal charges.
According to the Bahamian Attorney General’s Office, the 30-year-old man was detained after the Bahamian government received formal notice from the US of the charges against him.
Sam Bankman-Fried is 30 years old.
Charged & Arrested
Damian Williams, US attorney for the Southern District of New York, confirmed Bankman-Fried’s arrest and said the indictment would be unsealed Tuesday.
“This afternoon Bahamian authorities arrested Samuel Bankman-Fried at the request of the US Government, based on a sealed indictment filed by SDNY,” Williams tweeted. “We hope to move forward with unsealing the allegation in the morning and will have more to say at that time.”
The charges include wire fraud, wire fraud conspiracy, securities fraud, securities fraud conspiracy, and money laundering, the New York Times reported, citing a person with knowledge of the matter.
The shaggy-haired former billionaire has been under investigation by the Justice Department since FTX, which had been among the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, imploded and filed for bankruptcy on November 11.
Federal prosecutors have reportedly been examining how FTX handled client funds and the alleged transfer of hundreds of millions of US dollars to the Bahamas at the time of the bankruptcy filing.
They were also investigating whether Bankman-Fried manipulated the crypto markets by orchestrating trades that led to the collapse of the TerraUSD cryptocurrency earlier this year.
Separate from the indictment, the Securities and Exchange Commission, which also opened an investigation, said Monday the regulator had authorized charges related to Bankman-Fried’s alleged violation of securities laws.
An SEC official said in a statement that the charges would be filed publicly in the Southern District of New York on Tuesday.
Bankman-Fried, who resigned as FTX chief executive on the day of the bankruptcy filing, has repeatedly denied personal responsibility to him for the platform’s collapse and distanced himself from the fraud allegations, insisting that he “never attempted to commit fraud”.
News of his arrest came a day before US lawmakers questioned Bankman-Fried about the disastrous collapse of FTX on Capitol Hill in Washington DC on Tuesday.
Hours before he was caught, Bankman-Fried had said he would testify remotely before the House Financial Services Committee because he was “quite overloaded” and had safety concerns about traveling to DC.
The Bahamian government’s attorney general’s office said Monday it hoped to assist in Bankman-Fried’s extradition to the United States.
It was not immediately clear how quickly that would occur.
“The Bahamas and the United States have a shared interest in holding accountable all individuals associated with FTX who may have betrayed the public trust and violated the law,” Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davis said following his arrest.
“While the United States files criminal charges against SBF individually, The Bahamas will continue its own regulatory and criminal investigations into the FTX collapse, with the continued cooperation of its regulatory and law enforcement partners in the United States and elsewhere. ”.
