Shot Dead at Park Party
A 28-year-old man who died after being shot at a meeting in east London has been identified as a local man, Sam Brown.
Shortly thereafter, two men, one of whom was Mr. Brown, were admitted to an East London hospital. Mr. Brown of Waltham Forest later died of gunshot wounds.
The other man, in his 30s, had a stab wound.
The person, later discharged from the hospital, was arrested in connection with the incident.
Detectives are conducting a murder investigation into Mr. Brown’s death.
Police urged eyewitnesses to remember “his grieving father and mother” and assist in investigating him.
Residents near Cheney Row Park said they feared trouble when they saw groups arriving in the area.
“We live around the corner, so I didn’t see anything, but I saw it before more children showed up,” said one man who did not want to be identified.
“We didn’t think something like this would happen.”
Another resident, who did not want to be named, said that a group of young people “smoked pot” in the afternoon and said he had to bring his young daughter home from the park at around 5 pm.
“There’s always trouble around here,” he said.
There is a broad security strip around the park and adjacent streets as officers go door-to-door conducting investigations in the area.
There is also a forensic team at the scene.
Chief Inspector Kelly Allen, who led the investigation, said: “My heart goes out to the family of Sam who died in this reckless act of violence.
“I can assure you of my and my team’s full commitment to ensure justice is served.
“I think 50 to 100 people gathered in and around Cheney Row Park during the music shoot.
“I urgently need to speak to everyone involved in that incident, even if you don’t think you saw anything important, you need to come forward and talk to the officers.
“There will be footage and images taken at the event and we need to see them. Make sure you save all these images – we will provide you with a link to upload them shortly.
“For those who are considering whether or not to go to the police, I ask you this morning to put yourself in the shoes of the victim’s grieving parents. They deserve answers.
“Whoever brings a gun to such a meeting neither deserves its patronage nor deserves to be free to inflict further harm on others. Please do the right thing and get in touch today.”
