Authorities say the mother’s text messages proved she was aware of her daughter’s condition, Law and Crime reported.
She texted her boyfriend on the subject on March 14 and 15 and posted on March 21, ‘OMG baby. Listen, I’m in my room and my mom called me. (redacted) He was asking if I could check on him to ensure he wasn’t dead.’
Police said that although her boyfriend told her to take the girl to the hospital, she did not go.
One of her older children claimed that she tried to treat lice using mouthwash.
The grandmother is also accused of allegedly being unaware of the seriousness of the situation.
He had discussed calling 911 but didn’t call and texted Sandra that the girl ‘can’t go to the ER with her hair, but that’s up to me since you’re not at home.
An autopsy found that the girl died of anemia from an infection from a head lice infestation.
Malnutrition was also found to be a contributing factor.
The girl’s overall cause of death was given as negligence by the Pima County Coroner’s Inspector.
After the two women were arrested, Sandra’s other two older children with lice were placed in the custody of other family members.
