Shante Daniel-Folkes died after being hit by a police car in Brixton, south London, on June 9, 2021. She was described as ‘sweet’ and ‘special’: two police officers were charged with her murder.

Death Cause & Suspect Charged

The woman was hit by the car on Stockwell Road, Brixton, south London, at around 11:20 p.m. m. She died a short time later despite the efforts of paramedics.

A friend remembered the Croydon College alumnus on Facebook as “sweet, sophisticated, sassy, cunning, special, stunning, simple yet complex, determined and selfless.”

Paying tribute to Shante, Louella Carnie said, “You were so loved, full of life and love and character and you had your whole life ahead of you, you really were a shining star.”

Today, the police watchdog announced that PC Nadeem Patel, 27, and PC Gary Thomson, 30, have been charged in his murder.

Patel, charged with causing the death by dangerous driving, and Thomson, accused of dangerous driving, will appear in Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct said: “The charges relate to an incident on June 9 last year in which 25-year-old Shante Daniel-Folkes was hit by a police vehicle driven by PC Patel on Stockwell Road in Brixton.

“PC Thomson was in a different police vehicle. Both officers were responding to an emergency incident at the time.

“Ms. Daniel-Folkes sadly died at the scene of the collision and our condolences go out to her family and loved ones.

“Our investigation concluded in May 2022, when we handed over a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) which authorized the charges.”

The Met Police confirmed that both officers are on restricted duty.
