Suspect Acquitted of Murdering Tara Grinstead
Online court records confirmed that the 36-year-old Duke was not found guilty of malice and murder. Duke was also found not guilty of aggravated assault and theft. However, he was found guilty of concealing a death.
In 2017, Duke was arrested in connection with the death of Grinstead, who was beauty pageant queen before becoming a teacher.
Grinstead, 30, was last seen walking out of a dinner party on October 22, 2005, when Duke was 21, a graduate of the same school where Grinstead taught history.
The location of Grinstead’s body has remained a mystery to this day.
Grinstead was a former Miss Tifton who competed in the Miss Georgia pageant three times.
Two days after he was last seen alive, police went to Grinstead’s home in Ocilla. There, they found his car in the driveway and his cell phone was charging in a wall socket. The clothes she had worn for dinner before she disappeared were still in a pile on the bedroom floor.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution covered Duke’s case extensively, reporting that when he stood on the witness stand, he retracted his previous confession and told the court that his friend Bo Dukes had committed the murder. (The Duke and Dukes are not related.)
In March 2019, 37-year-old Dukes was found guilty of helping to hide Grinstead’s death. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Dukes told investigators that in 2017, Duke helped cremate the body of a woman he allegedly accidentally killed in a walnut orchard.
Dukes was summoned to the stand during Duke’s trial, but exercised his Fifth Amendment rights, according to the Journal-Constitution.
The newspaper reported that Duke’s trial took nine days.
Prosecutors noted that in 2017, Duke also submitted a written confession to investigators. He allegedly told police that he broke into Grinstead’s home to steal money for drugs. When he caught her, she hit him, he told the police at the time.
Investigators also said Duke knew of non-public details about the case, including a call to Grinstead’s home that evening from a nearby pay phone.
Duke will be convicted today and face 10 years for hiding a body. He would take credit for the five years he had already served.
